Scope and Contents

This register of Patrick N. Butler contains six folders in one box about and by this Norbertine Priest. Folder one contains biographical materials.

Folder two is the copy of the 1941 DES PERES yearbook with articles on Father Butler as Dean of St. Norbert College.

Folder three has a photograph and articles from the 1942 DES PERES. It also contains newspaper articles and St. Norbert College News Releases about him.

Folder four is the Doctor of Philosophy dissertation from the University of Wisconsin by Father Butler.

Folder five has photographs of him.

Folder six has 30 photographs of various sizes and times in the life of Patrick Butler. These were removed from the regular archival photograph collection and placed here to bring all materials about him in one register.

Biographical / Historical

This short biographical note is taken from the St. Norbert College Public Relations Office. It was written by James D. Bailey, the Director of the Office, at the death of Father Patrick Butler. The release is dated February 2, 1973.

The Rev. Patrick N. Butler, O.Praem., died today (Feb. 2) in a local hospital after a brief illness.

A noted Shakespearean scholar, Fr. Butler was named Professor Emeritus, English, at commencement ceremonies at St. Norbert College in 1971. He served as chairman of the SNC English Department from 1930 to 1961 and as Dean of the College from (1939) to 1942.

The educator, who completed his undergraduate studies at St. Norbert College in 1922, received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Univerisity of Wisconsin. He also pursued graduate studies in theology at St. Norbert Seminary.
