Biography

In addition to serving his country in the U.S. Army, Harold “Harry” J. Baeten attended St. Norbert High School from 1946-1950 and St. Norbert College from 1951-1955. He earned a Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and a Ph. D. from the University of Michigan. Harry spent his career as an educator and a naturalist, implementing significant developments in the sciences at St. Norbert College, beginning in 1957, and inspiring the love of science in generations of students in his nearly 40 years at the College. Harry’s faculty service included teaching, research, advising, and committee work. In 1970, at a time of major reorganization, he was elected chair of the newly formed Division of Natural Sciences, a position he held until 1984 while continuing to teach on a half-time basis. Harry then returned to fulltime teaching until his retirement in 1994. His passion for history led him to write two books: a history of St. Norbert College and a genealogical account of the Baeten family.
