From St. Norbert College press release on January 28, 2013 (written by Mike Counter):
The Sigma-Iota chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity and the Iota-Lambda chapter of Alpha Xi Delta sorority at St. Norbert College are teaming up to help benefit the Literacy Green Bay program.
Literacy Green Bay, originally established in 1981, aims to help adults and families acquire the reading, writing, math, English language, computer and general workforce skills required for today's workplace.
A lack of funding from grants and other sources for the organization's Children First Family Literacy Program puts the long-term viability of the program in jeopardy. To support the programs, the St. Norbert Greek groups will be selling silicone wristbands with "Knights Unite -- 2013" on them. They will cost $1 per wristband.
"The idea behind Knights Unite is we want to not only raise money for this important program, but show the greater Green Bay community how St. Norbert College can come together for a worthy cause," said Kappa Sigma treasurer and project coordinator Sam Morris.
The Greek groups plan to sell the wristbands at St. Norbert basketball and hockey games, and during the lunch/dinner rushes in Michels Commons on the St. Norbert campus starting on January 28 and continuing through February 15.
The Children First Family Literacy Program helped 67 local families complete their GED and ELL programs from 2011-2012.
"This Children First program is the only program of its kind in the area," said Literacy Green Bay board member Jim Stamatakos. "The program is so important to the Greater Green Bay community, and I'm hopeful that this effort from Kappa Sigma and Alpha Xi Delta will help secure the long-term future of the program."
