Biographical / Historical
Norbert J. Flanigan joined the biology faculty at St. Norbert College in 1963 and chaired the department in 1965. Dr. Flanigan was a native of Green Bay and a 1940 graduate of St. Norbert, where he received his BS in Biology. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees from the State university of Iowa. His Ph.D. was in the field of zoology, with a minor in anatomy. His principal field of research was in neuroembryology, the study of the influence of the development of peripheral structures upon the development of the central nervous system. Following military service as an infantry officer from 1941-1946, Flanigan joined the faculty of St. Francis College, Loretto, PA. From 1948-1952 he taught at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. While pursuing graduate studies at the State University of Iowa, he also served as an instructor. Additionally, Flanigan's research on the neuroanatomy of dolphins had implications for neurologists studying human disorders such as paralysis. He conducted his research with the U.S. Navy who was interested in information about propulsion and echolocation. St. Norbert awarded Dr. Flanigan professor emeritus status in 1989.
