Biographical / Historical
Norbert Ecker was a 1941 alumnus of St. Norbert College and a faculty member from 1948-1981. Ecker’s commitment to music and music education began officially at Green Bay’s Central Catholic High School when it opened in 1941. For eight years he did double duty, commuting as part-time band director between Central Catholic and, later, Premontre, and St. Norbert. Joining St. Norbert fulltime in 1957, Ecker’s postgraduate education boasted extensive private instruction in wind instruments. He obtained his master of science degree in education from UW-Madison. A year of study in Paris, a sabbatical in Budapest, Hungary, and tutoring by music specialists in California, New York, and Colorado contributed to his expertise. The oboe, English horn, flute, clarinet, and saxophones were instruments he owned, played, and taught. During his tenure at St. Norbert, Ecker also spent thirteen years as chairman of the music department, working to expand the music discipline to what it is today.
